From the sand

Hit my local beach Fri. at low tide. With the extreme low I was able to wade to the second bar it was covered up in fish with the water about 2’ deep. Sight casted to a pair of these

right after I got there. Then proceeded to hook up with fish I couldn’t stop. Broke hooks, leaders and the butt section before I finally landed a red in the jumbo class (no photo as water was waist deep by then. Water was crystal clear so you could sight cast to the fish when they crossed the bar. Saw dozens of reds and blacks. Going back today with the 10wt. and sinking line. Most memorable day in the surf I have ever had.

nice man!

Very nice!! I do alot of surf fishing and have tossed around the idea of taking my 8wt out. Looks like I’ll have to give it a try now. What flys do you use to catch them in the surf?

killer! a treat! grand tuggers of drag

Yes! Way to go and what fishfinder said, what flies were you using in the surf?

Flippin sweet. I fly in the surf a lot in the outer banks and get blues, spanish and a flounder every now and then. chartreuse over white clousers always worked for me. i have seen a few small sharks playing in the surf off of iop but couldnt get them to take a fly

I was using bent back jig flies tied clouser style but I broke one and lost the other. I caught the red on a white deceiver. The flies kept getting swept above the fish in the current and waves. I went back today with sinking line and was able to keep the flies down. At low today even with the wind and waves I could still see that the fish were there by the dozens. There were even 2 nice sheeps cruising within a rod length of my feet for 10 minutes. The fish wouldn’t eat anything I threw. I went through the whole flybox and flogged in the wind for a solid 3 hours only to miss 1 fish. I am now obsessed. Thoughts of those fish will consume me this week. All work and other responsibilites will be scheduled around low tide. I will figure them out and I will be the victor.

Thanks for following up with the details. I am anxious to give it a try.

Hit the beach the last 2 mornings (Wed. and Thurs.) by 4:30 off by 8:00 for work. Not much to show for it. One large blue fish, one up close encounter with a curious black tip in the dark, one mystery break off (blue or spanish chewed up leader) and an extrodinary case of monkey butt (prickley heat). Going to work in heat all day with dry, salty neither regions in a tool belt after morning of fishing: no bueno. Tide never got low enough to expose the bar this morning. Guess it’s over for 2 weeks.

I second iFly on that one Cayman. how large was your blue?? best time for me in the OBX surf was always an hour before and through sunup. I preferred to start my morning with a tall, cool Budweiser. of course I was on vacation during these times but its better kick than coffee. Monkey Butt sounds like a great name for a fly
