Ft Lauderdale

Will be moving down that way late this coming summer. I hope to take my boat (if I can find a place to park it). If I do not have my boat, I will be looking into buying a nice kayak. I am looking forward to the duck hunting and inshore fishing.

Anyone have any experience fishing in Ft Lauderdale. I know S. FLorida (keys, Flamingo, Biscayne Bay) are great, but have not heard much about Ft Lauderdale. Any advice, tips, knowledge that anyone would like to share.

People can still catch the occasional, Square Grouper, down there:imp:

I have read that boat theft and the theft of boat parts, etc, is terrible down there.

Packs; Can’t help you with fishing down there. Have fished the Keys! You might wait for skinneej, to chime in he lives down that way!

Packs- You wouldn’t happen to be related to the Packs that own Packs landing would ya?

Nope

I can help you in Ft Pierce if that helps.

Didn’t know what it was. Googled “square grouper”. That’s great! I bet they’d sell pretty well out of the back of a fish store.

Great fishing for tarpon, jacks, snook, black drum and sheeps in the ICW. Lots of other small snapper and grunts. It’s not that far from Biscayne Bay in Miami where there is excellent trout fishing if you know where to go. On a good day (there are lots of them) you can fish the reefs offshore (about a mile) I have seen johnboats out there and it gets pretty calm in the summer, especially at night. Inland there is good fishing in the many canals for bass, snook, tarpon, peacock bass and other exotics. No boat needed, just pull off the road and fish. Everglades are good for bass and brim. Not much in the way of hunting in South Florida. Most go to the lake for the ducks, but again, not many hunters in that area.

Thanks cappy

There’s a reef right off of the beach, not sure of the fishability of it. I know I chased a few hog snapper while free diving there about 4 years ago during mini-season. Check out Florida’s Lobster Mini Season. It’s a 2 day romp late July I think that has everyone and their brother just off the beach diving for lobsters. In the 2 day period I think we broke 30 total. We swam from the beach and free dove on day one with maybe 7 in the bag, then had a boat and snorkeled behind the boat being pulled with a ski rope until we saw antennae sticking out of a rock. Then we free dove about 25’ or so and loaded up. One rock gave us 17 keepers that day. It was a fun experience and I dream of doing it again.

I’d watch Florida Sport Fishing if you have access to it. They go out of Hillsboro Inlet a lot and catch everything you could want to catch. They catch tons of dolphin with the skyline in the background. Weed lines seem to form within site of the beach. They deep drop what looks to be less than 10 miles out. They catch sails from paddle boards, etc, etc. Usually they are on a massive Sea Vee, but occasionally they take a bay boat out too. I think they even claimed that he paddled the paddle board out the day he was catching sails from it.

Seems like a dream location for an offshore fisherman.

You can also check the Florida Sportsman Magazine website or get the magazine at news stands or book racks. It is a great source of information. Ft Lauderdale is in the South section. I’ve seen it in many stores here. As far as “offshore” fishing, there are reefs that are well within 1/4 mile of the beach. Off Deerfield Beach there are rocks extending out from the beach that have yielded some nice snapper.

I used to live in Dania Beach which is just south of Ft Lauderdale. As mentioned earlier the good fishin is a cast away from the beach. There is Dania pier which you can literally see huge snook everywhere just walking down the pier. There are numerous drift boats to take you offshore 3 miles where you can catch kingfish all day, mutton snapper, sailfish, dolphin, whatever and the drift boats are not expensive. Look for the Sea Legs III out of Dania Beach. They also do night trips for yellowtail snapper which is fun. The keys are not a far drive either you can get to key west in a few hours if you dont stop at every bar on the way. Check out Boatless Fishing Forum.

I’ve fished offshore out of Lauderdale a couple times and the fishing is excellent. You can get into pelagics a couple miles offshore. As a result, the fish are pressured a lot because everyone is out there chasing the same fish you are and are not afraid to fish right beside you. Around here if you get a couple hundred yards from someone offshore you will get looks, around there getting a couple boat links away is very common. Just trying to spare you some frustration when you first get out there. The fishing etiquette is much different.
