We are trying to pinpoint a fuel delivery issue that became apparent over the weekend. Ran 12-15 miles nearly wide open and motor started to bog down('06 F250). We found the fuel bulb had collapsed(bulb is in line before filters which were replaced 2 days prior)). When we would come off plane the bulb would slowly “release” and get enough fuel that you could run again for 5 minutes before the same problem repeated(fuel pickup screen clogged?).
The boat is plumbed for twins so I switch fuel lines after blowing through the new line to ensure it was not clogged. We ran 40 more miles out, fished all day, and 30 miles back in at 5000 RPM and about 15 miles out the motor started to “loose” RPM’s(would only spin up to 5200 before sputtering, then 5000, 4800, and finally 4500). The bulb was not collapsing at this time, but it would not get hard until we pulled off plane… then everything would be fine for another 5 minutes or so.
- Junk in fuel tank(just added 120 gallons of fresh non ethanol b4 trip) clogging fuel pickups?
- Anti siphon issue?
- crappy non e fuel?
New filters are going on(and examine contents of old)- but want to get some other opinions on what could be happening.
I’ve learned there are 2 sensors on the back of our motors. They sometimes “sense” stuff that isn’t there. I had engine troubles last Friday and once we unhooked the oil pressure sensor the motor ran fine all weekend. Taking it in today or tomorrow to have the sensor replaced.

need to run a vacuum test on the boat system to see if you do have a fuel restriction, or a weak or clogged fuel lift pump

Check your fuel filter. If you had ethanol fuel in there before and added non-E fuel it will cause a phase separation that clogs the filter and causes problems like that. Happened to me last year, run all of one or the other, don’t mix. Carry an extra fuel filter and wrench.

Yeah, but do you consider a dog to be a filthy animal? I wouldn’t go so far as to call a dog filthy but they’re definitely dirty. But, a dog’s got personality. Personality goes a long way.

Thank Yall for the ideas. I’m 95% certain we have had ethanol free in the boat since pumping out the tank 2 Winters ago. I would also believe the mechanical aspect(bulb compression) rules out a sensor issue(although that could have the issue later in the day). Chris- may just have to bring the boat over and have yall take a look(we had the tank pressure tested about 2-3 years ago- doubt that matters today).
