Fuel Economy

I’ve been looking at some performance reports trying to gauge how much fuel I will need for my Hilton Head trip. When you see a MPG for a boat, is that in nautical miles?

Harbor Town is ~ 85 nm from Wappoo if that helps ya</font id=“blue”>

thanks - I’ve got my route planned out, I’m just trying to see if I should be getting 4.5 miles or nautical mile per gallon. Doesn’t make a huge difference, I should be able to make it on a tank of gas either way, just would feel a little better getting 4.5 NMPG if that is what it is indeed measured in (which I think it should)

it is not nautical miles

I’m now at www.teamcharlestonmarine.com

thanks… does it make sense that it should be? so I’ll burn 8 more gallons than I was thinking… still not bad. I’m estimating I should be able to make it there and back on about 45 gallons. I’ve got a 60 gallon tank so I’ve got some wiggle room and just to be safe, I’ll probably fill up before I head back.

If you’re calculating it that close, you’re cutting it to close. Miles per gallon can vary widely for the same boat in different load and weather situations. If you’re not sure you can make it on one tank, then make sure you know where the marinas are on the way and make sure you always have enough fuel to get to the next one. You should make sure you know where the marinas are anyway, for safety reasons. If something happens, you’ll want to know where the nearest help is.

That is why I said that I’ll fill up before I head back. I currently have my route mapped out with a GPS point every mile as well as channel markers on my GPS map. I’ve got all the marinas located with GPS points as well and have charts and a handheld GPS as back-up. I was hoping to get my VHF radio in by the time I take the trip, but that will probably not happen. I’ve got my weather radio though and should be in cell phone range most of the way.

MPG = miles / fuel used. Fuel used will be a finite quantity, mileage is determined by how it’s measured. If on my GPS, it’s statute miles. And the only right or wrong is in application of the formula …

Correct - my question was concerning the performance reports for different boats and wondering if the were recording in Nautical miles or Statute miles.

Sounds like you have plenty of fuel for a one-way trip.Run to HHI,fill er up,and run back.No brainer.

Ahhh, now I understand. Never mind …

DDD,
Do you have a fuel flow sensor or an accurate gas guage?
If you do, if you haven’t used more than 1/3 tank of gas, you should be good for the trip back.
Have fun, and be safe.

Happy boatin’ y’all!!
