Fuel Fill Up Problems

Last week for the second time trying to fill the boat up i am having issues. I pop the gas open put the nozzle in and as soon as i pull the trigger the gas stops like its full or cant make it down the gas fill line. I thought it was the gas station but after trying 3 different stations its obviously the boat. If i barely pull the trigger it will fill but other than that it chokes out after about a second. Anyone have a solution? ive never encountered anything like this…

Sounds like a venting problem! What kind of boat/make /model/year? If you can get to the tank end of the vent hose, try blowing a little air through it to see if it’s blocked!

Yep, I’d say the dirt daubers have built a mud nest in your vent line.

Cracker, I had daubers block up my pee hole on my motor once! Doesn’t take them long either.

They do that to mine about once a week if I don’t keep it covered. I got in the habit of sticking a piece of tape over the pee hole when the boat is sitting. Little devils fill every hole they can find with mud.

if its not the vent, also seen foam in the hull pinch the fill line. after time, the hose gets weaker and collapses

thanks yall, ill check this weekend and let you know what i found

I was having similar problems and discovered that my vent hose drooped down pretty low – after a topping the tanks off once, fuel would sit in the vent hose and block air from coming out. I re-routed them up and haven’t had it happen again.

The vent line should have a loop in it, this acts as a water trap to keep water from entering the tank through the vent fitting. Liquid in the vent line won’t keep the tank from venting. Just like blowing bubbles through a straw.

Had the exact same problem with my boat for a while. Turned out to be corrosion inside the thru-hull clamshell vent fitting. It had restricted airflow to the point that I couldn’t pump gas for more than a few seconds without the nozzle clicking off. Very frustrating.
Replaced the fitting and problem solved.

still having issues. I looked for a pinched vent line with no success i guess ill run a cloths hanger down there sometime this week and see if i have any luck

Had the same issue until the boat would not take even a little fuel. My diagnosis was to run a small sewer snake down the filler. It stopped about 2’ in. I used a compressor to put air (low pressure) into the tank through the vent line to see if air would rush back out the fuel filler tube. No air. In fact when I removed the air tip, air rushed back out of the vent tube indicating I had pressurized the tank. Definitely clogged filler tube. Insane right? The tube is 1 1/2" thick. My Sea Hunt has a large floor access to the tank but I had to cut away all of the foam surrounding the filler tube on the side and under the floor before I could get the tube out. What a pain. Cut away the tube at the cap, drilled a hole in the tube, tied a line so I could use it to pull the new tube back in. Once out, I cut into the filler tube and saw that the inner lining had separated from the tube wall and blocked the tube. See photo. Pulled in new fuel tubing with the rope and buttoned back up.
