What’s the take on the large funnel filters used when filling up as a prefill fuel/water seperator? Do they work, are they worth the extra $40? Also, how do I determine if my Racor filter is behaving properly? The bottom vessel is always filled with fuel, so how can i determine whether the filter needs to be drained and whether the receptacle is holding water or other undesireables?
what do you mean by the “large funnel”
change filter element annually or if water and or debris gets above teh plastic bowl

Think he means one of those filler funnels that have a filter element in it and are supposed to prefilter your fuel before it goes into tank. Used to be a must have for boating in Mexico and buying fuel there, mainly to filter out crud in gas and algae growth in diesel fuel. Not really sure if they do much for any water in fuel tho.

Right, the prefilter funnels that are sold. See below
My plastic bowl on the Racor is always filled with fuel. I can’t determine whether the bowl has crud or water. Should the bowl be completely drained under optimal conditions?
filter should always be full
drain a small amount into a cup and check for fuel or water.
you will be able tell the difference
in you get water in the fuel, rarely if ever is it clear like the fuel. it always appears cloudy
