I have a 2008 Yamaha Hpdi, 200 hp., was attempting to replace the fuel filter under the cowl yesterday, but couldn’t get the cup to unscrew from the top, it won’t budge, so I removed it from the mounting bracet and unhooked the fuel lines and sensor wire hoping that I would be able to twist it off with a better grip, not happening, so whats the trick? Also, when I removed the fuel cup assembly, the sensor fell out of the cup, it looks like it just pops back in place, I put all parts in bucket to take home, but during the trip back home I guess something bumped it and cracked the tip of the fuel sensor probe a little, not in two pieces though, can this be glued somehow and put back into fuel cup, or do I need to replace whole cup and sensor assembly, I may need to replace whole fuel filter assembly if I can’t get it unscrewed as well, thanks for any replies.
Welcome to the wonderful world of ethanol! Ethanol swells up the plastic fuel filter bowls and makes them as you found out very tough to remove, and even tougher to get back on if you do manage to get it off! Alot of shops just replace the entire assembly each filter change.
Or… One can remove the whole assembly and drain all the fuel out thru inlets and put in a freezer for a hour or so and the plastic bowl will shrink enough to allow it to be unscrewed, then change out filter and reinstall bowl quickly or refreeze bowl again and install.

Thanks Russ, the freezer did the trick, now if only to figure the sensor problem out.
