Fuel filter...water separater?

I’m in the process of replacing things on the boat and I got to the fuel lines which are in need of replacing, and I trace them to the fuel filter… It is rusted pretty solid to the holder that is mounted under the rear of the boat. I’m planning on just replacing the whole thing.

I’m asking if anyone has any preferences on fuel filters. Also is there a difference in a filter and a fuel water separater? It is currently a quicksilver model 35-802893Q.

The engine is a 1983 Johnson. Thanks.

Sierra stainless steel head unit and either Sierra or Racor element and bowl. Chris V should have those in stock.

Make sure you get one with a sight bowl and drain on the bottom. You can see when you get a few table spoons of water in the sight bowl and drain it rather than being blissfully ignorant until the filter fills with water and stops passing fuel.

I seem to recall that USCG regulations prevent the Racor filters with the see-through plastic bases from being used anywhere but in open motor wells on outboard-equipped boats. I think you have to use the metal-base models in situations where the filter is to be mounted in the bilge.

Or am I mistaken?

Only if there is a source of ignition below decks. ie: inboard motor etc.
