ive got a 90 merc 2-stroke on my 1602 hightide and want to put a cannister style fuel filter on the boat. any suggestions on where to mount it or a specific type i should use?
Not familiar with the layout of the boat, but I would mount it someplace where it is fairly easy to get to so you can change the filter, but out of the way so as not to get snagged by a cast net, dock line, etc. Make sure you use a 10 micron filter, anything less is a waste of time & money. My .02

I have also wanted to add a fuel filter outside of the Mercury Motor filter.
I have been warned that Mercury motors operated on a lower vacuum than other motors and this could cause you to “starve” the motor for fuel.

I run 225 opti’s

the opti’s seem to be more finicky with the additional fuel filters. You need to check the vaccum after install to verify the filter had not added to much restriction to the fuel system. If yours is a carb motor then you should be fine. I know when I called merc they did not reccomend any additional filters for the optimax
Jeff… this is your old boat!

should i remove the filter under the hood if i put the canister on the transom? i pulled that filter off saturday and had some red almost silt-like deposit running out with the fuel. was going to replace it but if it would maybe help the vacuum issue then ill just replace the hose and put in the can filter.
Clinton, I have been told that the mercury fuel system/water seperator that is on the motor from the factory is a very good system and will do fine without adding additional filters. I thought about adding the racor’s, but after some research decided against it. If you install racor’s you need ot get the vaccum tested and make sure that you maintain the filters reguraly so they don’t restrict flow. Hope you are enjoying the boat. I miss having a nice offshore boat.
jeffro is exactly right

I would mount it to the transom, just to the side of the motor
I wold use a stainless steel mount, with a racor 3213 filter

thanks chris v. installing this this afternoon and going to replace the inline filter as well.
If you haven’t bought the filter kit yet, I’ve got one I bought from boater’s world that won’t fit my boat. It’s the Moeller 10micron with the mount and all. It has the clear bowl at the bottom so you can see if you’ve got water. I think I paid $34 for it on clearance. I’ll sell it for $20.
Happy boatin’ y’all!!
hanapaa,i havent gotten it yet, tied up with ballgames yesterday. coming through charleston and mt.p this afternoon if you can meet me.
is it about same size as the racor? painted or ss?
for that price, doesnt matter, use it, and in a few years, replace it if need be
