Our boat has been sitting awhile so I’m going over it making repairs, etc… Anyway, while poking around under the console, I decided to check below the deck (specifically, the fuel gauge on top of the fuel tank) and this is what I saw (see pics). As I started cleaning off the white powdery stuff, I noticed the gauge part was loose and when I unscrewed it, realized it was messed up. This explains my running out of gas a summer ago. I am really not familiar with this issue so I’m looking for some guidance.
It looks like I need a new sending unit. If so, I have a few questions:
- Are that universal? If not, how do I know what to get?
- If not, what is best, mechanical, reed switch, reed array or
electrical?
- Do they all come with the gauge on top like mine? It was screwed
down on top of the unit but it seems that it was just “sitting” in
the bowl like area.
Looking for any help here as I lack any expertise here.

Any help would be much appreciated!
Take sender out. Stick measuring tape in hole. Measure bottom to top. Subtract an inch. Order a wema fuel sender in that length. Clean area. Install sender. Connect black to ground. Pink to gauge

What loopervet said is dead on^^^^^^^^^^
Good idea while sender is out to check for any water/trash in tank.
drain all fuel , shine light “flashlight” not cig lighter and inspect
bottom of tank, clean if any water / trash is found ;; this also allows you to check accuracy of new sender as you refill tank,1/4= ? gals,1/2= ? gals,3/4= ?gals ,full equals ??? gallons…post up results!!!
Turn on light before you get near the fumes.
Good luck, Doug.

I looked at the WEMA senders but, I did not see one like mine. I like the idea of having a gauge on the tank as well as one on the console so that if the console one goes out, you can always check out the one on the tank.
Is this setup (the one I had) unusual or not used much anymore? Most senders I see aren’t setup like this.
I did find this (below) and it is exactly what I had on my sending unit. Just not sure what unit I’d need to match up with this.

Thanks for bearing with me. I’m pretty handy and can fix most things but this is new territory for me.

do you have a gauge on the dash?
if so, just get a standard WEMA unit.
you do not need the gauge under the floor

IF I RESPOND IN ALL CAPS, ITS NOT ON PURPOSE, AND I AM NOT YELLING
I do have a console gauge, I guess I’m kinda funny about replacing stuff with the same though it doesn’t look like I’ll be able to. I pulled the old one yesterday and it appears to be a mechanical one made by Moeller with the conversion capsule. I contacted Moeller today and said I needed a sending unit for a 4.75" deep tank. They no longer make one that short so it looks like I’ll have to go with something else anyway. I liked having an alternate gauge in the event something went bad with the one on my console.
This is the old one.

Looked at the WEMA electric, need to find out whether I need the 4" or 4.5".
Thanks all for your help.
