Fuel gauge trouble

I bought a 04 Sea Pro 180cc a couple of weeks ago and it has a few minor issues that I need to fix. This is my first boat and as a newb I need some help. The first problem is the fuel gauge does not work. Can anybody give me some detailed help on how to proceed in fixing it?

Thanks

test for 12 volts at back of gauge

wait a second,
do you have a volt meter, and know how to use it?

Will check tonight if the rain holds off.

Thanks

If the gauge is good, you may need a sending unit which is a easy fix. You can do a search on this web site and there are a number of replys. I too own a sea pro and had to replace the sending unit last year. Easy fix with either a after market unit or name brand. I used the higher dollar unit and had no problems, four screw and re attach the wires.

I checked the gauge and was getting about 9V. Not as easy to get to as I thought it would be.

Skip the fuel gauge and put in a flow meter for an accurate fuel count.

Pop the deck plate and check the connections on the sending unit. SP didn’t use the finest materials or workmanship …

Check your ground.

before its going to work properly, you have to have 12 volts at teh gauge
sounds like a corrosion issue

Be very careful!! Not knowing what you’re doing when tampering with electricity and gasoline can cause big problems!!

…Politicians aren’t the “Oldest Profession”, but the results are still the same!!!

I did a little research on the site this week and I think that my problem is the sending unit. There is a strong smell of gas in the console when I open the doors. The door to the sending unit is beneath the console. I read where people with the same smell of gas and gauge trouble had sending unit problems so I think thats my problem. I could be wrong so Im going to do some more work on the boat tomorrow and see what I find. Thanks for all the help so far.
