So, the boat is a 2000 SeaPro 180CC. The fuel guage stopped working this summer and im not sure if this is something that I can fix myself or not. Im assuming that the sending unit is in the tank and the resistance of the float moving up and down register different ohms to the gauge. Can you still get the parts for a SeaPro even though they are no longer in production. Any thoughts on this? Anyone know how much the repair is? Thanks
The sending units are universal and can be bought at any boating store. They’re pretty easy to replace as long as you can get to it. There’s usually an inspection hatch just above the sending unit - it’ll be on the top of the tank, a round flange secured with 5 screws.
Check the wiring for corrosion first. If the wiring is good, it’s probably the sending unit.
You can make sure it’s not the gauge by grounding the pink wire coming off the back of the gauge. Easiest way is to locate the sending unit on the top of the gas tank. There should be a pink wire and a black wire (ground). With the ignition key in the “on” position, disconnect the pink wire and touch it to ground. The gauge should jump to full. If it does, it’s probably time for a new sending unit.
Awesome! And you even stuck with the AMC motor. It always bothers me a little to see everyone just drop in a chevy small block.
I’ve always wanted a '79 with the 360 and a T-18A 4 speed, but I can’t afford one in decent shape and don’t know enough or have enough time to fix one up. One day…
this is my 3rd CJ7. My first was an 84 with a 258 6cyl 5spd. it was great but not a V8. it was in great shape when i got in in 98 and i didnt have to do much to it. I later sold it and bought a 78 with a 304 3spd. it was OK but i didnt have the time or money to put into it and make it the way that I wanted it. My wife actually found this one Sept 08 on Craigs List. We went and looked at it and I went back and bought it that afternoon. the body was rough but the frame and drivetrain were in great shape. it had a brand new set of Pro Comp mud terrain 33x12.50 on it that still had the blue film on the letters. I got all of the lights and guages working, found a top on craigs list, rhinolined the interior myself, replaced the rear quarter panels and did some minor body work (not myself) and had it repainted. This jeep runs like a brand new one. the guy sold it to me for $3200. I have put $2400 in it and it was worth every penny.
a lot of the sea pros use a different style sending unit, but yes, they are still available
with the key on, jump a wire between the black and pink wires at teh back of the gauge
if it goes to full, gauge works
do it again at teh top of the sending unit
if it goes to full, wireing is good
replace sender
