Fuel line question

Had a weird thing happen at the dock on the lake. have a yamaha 115 4 stroke 2003 model on a 20/20 key west. Engine started up fine on the first cue on the trailer. Idled and cut off once. Restarted fine and i drove over to the dock and it idled fine for a couple minutes. Shut it off to load the family. Restarted and as soon as i started to pull off the dock it began to shake and run super rough before stalling. Tried in vain to restart for the next few minutes. Would turn over, but not start. Appeared to be starved for fuel. Looked at the fuel filter and it had gas. Tried to suction fuel via the bulb and it was limp and wouldn’t harden at all. Took off one side of the bulb and tried to mouth suction fuel to no avail. Gas guage read almost half a tank.Pulled the boat out and went to the gas station after seeing that the fuel water separator was empty. Put in about 8 gals. and manually filled the filter for the fuel water separator with gas. Screwed it back on and the boat started and ran great.
Could it be that i have a small crack in the lines or bulb that i can’t see? I know this seems trivial, but what would cause this?

cracked pick up tube?
gas gauge is wrong?

Thanks Chris. For the pick up tube i would have to go under the floor to the tank correct? My guage did mess up a few trips ago where it wasn’t reading the MPH. It has since corrected itself, but the gas guage never seemed to be affected as it went up and down based on my usage. I did replace the sender last season.

pick up tube is what the fuel line attaches to at the fuel tank
it should unscrew
