fuel pickup in tank clogged?

I had some old gas in tank. Its under console in a 17’carolina skiff. I pumped as much out as could but sure still had some in bottom of tank. I refilled tank with non ethanol and changed fuel/water separator. It smelled of old gas. I started motor at house and started fine. I took to river to test and motor cut off. I put one of new separators Chris V recommended that are clear. I saw had no gas in separator I tried pumping and could not get gas to separator, so loaded up and back to drawing board. I changed bulb and fuel line still nothing. I took fitting off at tank and put hose in tank and have flow. I put fitting back on and no flow. I have to assume pick up is clogged in tank. Is there a way to unclog or could it be something else.

Blow it out with an air compressor. Or take the pickup tube out and clean it.

I have a 17 CS and they are a pain to prime, did you fill the separator with fuel first ? Im assuming its a Racor filter and if so, it also has a vent on the front ( allen head). It will usually prime if you fill it first but if not you have to take out the vent screw in order to prime. Hope this helps.

I had a similar problem recently. Mine would start, run for a few and fade out. I just had work done and filters changed, so I could not figure it out… until I pulled the (plastic) gas tank out. It is under- the -seat on my Newport. I was going to check the line in the tank, but when I grabbed the tank by the top corners to wiggle it out, I found a soft corner. Turns out the breach was causing the tank to suck air…Bought a used tank from Oops Lost and it seems to be fine. I have yet to put it in the water, but does well on the muffs.

Had the screen filter on the bottom of the pick up tube in my tank get sucked up into the tube! Don’t know how that happened but it was a “B” to get out. Cut off both motors finly ended up unscrewing the pickup tube and run the hose in the hole to get home. Ended up putting it in a vise and beating it out with a hammed and long phillips screwdriver. Good luck fixing yours!

You can replace the pick up tube, they are cheap.

may be the anti siphon valve at the pick-up tube as well
stop in and get a new tube and anti siphon, around $20
its a 15-20 minute job on a skiff
