fuel problem

I have something that occasionally causes my boat not to take gas. After shrimping the other night I went to refill the boat and it only took .8 gallons. I know I burned more than this. I went out the next time and filled it up and it took 15 gallons. I have done this several times this year and it will not take gas one time and then the next take it like nothing is wrong.
Any ideas on what is causing this. I dont think it is the vent because even when it only takes .8 gallons it spills out of the vent.
Thanks in advance

Your vent hose may have a horizontal length that gets a leg of fuel when you launch or recover (steep ramp?) with a full tank. If you are rolling or pitching it may clear itself vs. a calm ride leaving it there. One way to clear it is wrap a rag around the nozzle and have someone hold a container under the vent and pull the trigger. Also check to see if it may be water that is getting in from a bad fitting vent thru-hull (sea or wash). My GW aux. tank had the first mentioned problem, vent hose long and flat - had to blow it out each fillup. Not sure why it didn’t draw thru while burning off it. Careful of the fuel splash…
