Fuel Sender

I think I am having trouble with my fuel sending unit. When the boat is running, the needle won’t go below half a tank. When I cut the power the needle drops back below empty so I assume it is not the gauge. Is there anything that I do to fix it or should I just replace. If I replace, is it easy to do, and is it expensive? Thanks as always for all of your help.

The sending unit on my Seapro 180CC is a fairly easy change out. It is located under the console below an access panel. The sending unit is attached to a couple of wires (as I recall), and is on the top of the fuel tank. 4 or 5 screws hold the sending unit (and seal) in place.

Just be careful not to do anything that will generate a spark when removing and replacing the unit, and don’t drop the unit in the tank (like I did). You’ll have to wait for the tank to be almost empty just to find it again.

Easy job - 30 to 45 minutes. An after market fuel sender with new seal should be less than $25.

Disconnect the battery before you start. Easy job to do about 30-45 minutes. Best fix-- install a fuel flow meter that monitors the amount left in the tank via flow sensor. Several of the new electronic GPS and sonar units already have the option and all that you need to buy is the flow sensor that installs in line to the engine.

If you are idling or still, does it read correct?

Check the connections at the fuel sender.

It drops steadily as I burn fuel until it gets to half a tank, then it acts as if it gets stuck. Once it gets to half a tank and below of gas left it stops there. Even when it is idling or sitting still. I had it down to 3 gallons of gas a while back (has a 30 gallon tank) and it was still reading half a tank. The guage only goes below half a tank (straight to below empty) when I turn the key to the off position. Does that make sense??? I assume since the guage goes below half a tank when I turn it off that the guage is not the issue. Hope I didn’t confuse you because I have almost confused myself writing this!

sounds like the sender isnt reading below a certain ohm level, but if you have corrosion in the wiring, it could also give a bad reading
