Fuel water separator?

I recently acquired my first boat for free from a close family friend. It is an 1994 17ft Cobia Caribbean with '94 Yamaha 75ph. It hadnt run in 3 years so I took it to a local freelance mechanic to get it running. I told him that I wanted to spend as little money as possible so just do whatever it takes to get it running and nothing extra. I just got the bill and it was around $600 which kinda hurts but I guess since I got the boat for free I shouldnt complain! Anyways, one of the things he suggested I get was a fuel water separator. I know nothing about the mechanics of a boat so I’m wondering if I really need this and if its worth the money. From some stuff I’ve read online, its not as mandatory in smaller boats and it is more of a “piece of mind” kinda thing. Is this correct?
Thanks

Does the boat have a built in fuel tank? If it does you want to put one on! If the boat uses the portable tank you take in and out no. The portable tanks are easy to clean out and use up, the built in, not so easy!

we put them on everything
a complete kit with everything you need is about $35
a carb job is about $400 for that motor

I agree with Chris, $35 up front can save you a lot of money and aggravation later.

It has an internal fuel tank. I guess it sounds pretty wise to get one then! I think im gonna go with the Yamaha mini 10-Micron.

Absolutely. I even have one on my 15 footer with a 6 gallon removable tank…

get the aftermarket unit with a composite head (never rusts or corrodes) and they use the standard filter that you can buy just about anywhere for under $10
the yamaha head is aluminum and will corrode

You bet it will corrode. I have one and it looks pretty crappy. Chris, do you have a part # for that composite head?

Absolutely…get one…no brainer!

I’d get the racor with the clear bowl in the bottom. I had the cheap one at first and it filled with water and dumped water into my carbs. Didn’t realize I had a rotten fuel fill hose and when the caulk at the floor cover went water got in the tank. Pumped out a half gallon of water from the tank

nice looking boat. i will give you $800 for the boat and that will take care of the repair bill. ha ha. i suggest getting the separator also. they can save you a heap of money.

i dont have a part number, its an aftermarket part that we stock.
you can use either there standard oilfilter style cannister or the much better racor with clear bowl on the composite head, and we stock both

Thanks Chris. I’ll try to pick one up the next time I am down that way.

hey doug; was that your boat? i did not know that you were getting rid of it. might have been in the market. still a nice looking boat.

Hey Bobby, No, I will have mine for a while, it is paid for and a new one is not in the budget right now.

o.k. my bad. i saw your post and thought that you might have hit the big time and moved on up in the boat world. ha ha. i went to the boat show today. there were some nice ones out there but only a few that held my interest. they were the center console tidewater and the seahunt. both were well suited for what we do. i looked mainly at the 19-21 footers. maybe my numbers will hit tonight and i can move up also. i am not really counting on it but; hey; you never know. take care.

You can’t win, I bought the winning ticket. Ha Ha. Nope, haven’t won any cash and you know where I work so no new boat for me.

600 bucks in that rig and you say it hurts, I just had my gut laugh for the day

Ron, it’s all relative. Some people only have $600 in disposable income per year, some per day.
