This was our first attempt with our new underwater camera. Hopefully we will get better, but it is still pretty cool. We never got a shot at this fish or even saw him. I wonder how many times a day this really happens. Enjoy
John I have a seaview camera we used for bluefin and had no success with any billfish(due to a scarcity of them at the time). I put it on th TURN ME LOOSE that is about to get to Venezuala. Hope to use it down there. Did you attach the camera to the dredge or use the planer type device as a solo camera pulled buy a cable? I was thinking of rigging it up to my dredge or as a seperate camera/teaser somehow. Any thoughts?? Jay is right now having Venezueala remorse I bet!!! Almost made it down there on thursday. Got to the airport and they lost my reservation, flight was booked so I came home. Going down thursday oct2 hope to see a few left over from the tournament. dad
It is a seaviewer, but I am not sure what model number. I think that we can get better with different weight. All we had was one down rigger ball.
Magezzi, it was a ballyhoo dredge.
Doc, We had it on a down rigger seperate from the dredge. We also tried it off of a planer which worked OK. Call me and I will give you the run down. I wish I were there with Jay right now. I hope they did well. I am going next year for sure. Will the Bi-op-sea be in Isla this winter?
That’s actually really cool. Have you ever thought of wiring it up to a laptop or small tv on the boat while pulling it? It would be really cool and you might be a little more prepared. Is there any reason why you couldn’t use this kind of system during the Governor’s Cup?
Richard, we had it wired up to the TV in the Salon. We saw him on the screen, but never saw him behind the boat. We were ready for the bite, but he just faded away. I wonder how many times that happens that we just dont know about.
As far as the Gcup goes, that thing is kind of a pain to mess with. It takes 2 people to put it in and take it out. I dont know how well it is going to work when it is rough. It loves grass! You can only see one of the dredges. Etc, etc. I think that we are just going to use it for fun.
You can rig it up with a bait behind it. Once we get used to it I think that we will try that.
i saw a show with them pulling baits for salmon on the west coast with the camera on the downrigger. After a week of filming they determined it was a 7 to 1 ratio of fish that actually take a bait.
It really makes you wonder how many fish just swim up to look.

We are all in the back of the boat trying to change all the lines over to these fake flying fish thingies When about a 25’ wave hits the boat! Do not ride in the cabin in rough seas… You will blow chunks!
I wasn’t able to download the video, but I assume it was a billfish on the dredge. Have you seen Clay Hensley’s video from Ghana which has alot of similiar underwater footage? Some of the blue marlin would track the lures for several minutes before coming up to bite, and sometimes they did not bite at all. I think that they trolled a wide angle camera on a planer directly behind the boat. Alot of times the captain could not see fish under the lures, and since the dredge is alot deeper than a lure, I am sure that it would be that much more difficult to see. With this technology you might just be able to find out how many billfish fish gave your spread a look that day. Nice work on getting the video.
That is awesome. Would love to have that hooked up to the old Raymarine E120. Would be nice to see what they are looking at or striking at. Thanks for the video
