Fun Day on the Wando

Fun and interesting day on the Wando. The reds were on my spot and feeding when I got there but turned off after 45 minutes. 7 on the first 7 cast. All upper and over slot. Picked up the fly rod and caught 2 small ones. 3 more bigs ones on jerk baits. Water crystal clear. Looked like a mountain stream. No more till late in the afternoon when I drifted over a large school. Did not see them until I was on top of them. Caught 3 nice ones before they got spooked. One break off. Ended up with 14. Beautiful day on the water.

If that’s all I have to worry about…there’s nothing to worry about.

Thats a great out. i love to see the waters around turn from dirt brown to crystal clear! what fly were you throwing?

A small fish in hand is better than big fish in promise

Something that most fly fisherman probably would not use. Was fishing structure and not flats and they have been turning their nose up at all conventional flies I have been throwing at them like different color and weight clousers and deceivers. I have had good success at this spot with all other arties. Was scratching my head and finally turned to the old crappie box. Tied on a small crappie jig with a 1" yellow paddle tail grub. The ones I use to use to catch shad in the spring time. 2 Reds in about 10 cast.

Hey thats awesome nothing wrong with be unconventional haha, I have a friend that had me tie some flies with paddles tails, and thats where they came from off of a grub … told me he couldn’t buy them anywhere and wanted me to make them so I did

Interesting Hurricane. Sounds like my kind of fly. Will have to try that. And thanks Dave. I was way overdue.

It was difficult to produce, because the tying thread kept cutting through the grub tail, not a very long lived fly … wasn’t to difficult though, I can probably find some pix or tie another

Nice work on those reds! Don’t get many of those up here in the upper mid-Atlantic.

For adding soft plastics to flies, put a wrap of thread down the shank and cover with super glue, then quickly slide your plastic of choice on.

Nice pictures! Love the unconventional approach to get them on the line. Awesome!
