funny trim issues, johnson 140 4 stroke '03

trims down fine, no problems there, trimming up is the issue, sometimes it works smetimes it doesnt. the only way to get it to trim up is push the down button and quickly release and press the up button, and sometimes that doesnt work. twim switch is new, and there is a clicking under the cowling, tried looking around for relays to replace

can you swim 5 miles? “NO” then what is the difference in 5 miles and 50 miles!!! Go for it!

Find the relays and switch them. If it trims up good and not down then replace the bad relays.

Clicking you hear is probably the starter solenoid (sp?)… most trim motors route through it. If it is clicking when you hit the switch, problem should be between it and the motor, if not the motor itself…

where are said relays, found some and switched them but no different, so i assumed they werent the correct ones? they were white and rectangular in shape pulled them out and the down trim still worked???

most trim motors will pick up power for the trim relay from the hot side of the starter solenoid, but it doesn’t normally run through the starter solenoid.
to find the relay, follow the wire from the tilt trim motor as it goes into the cowling, and the wire will go straight to the relay

did that and the wires are screwed down to terminals with what looks like a 7/16 nut, are these the relays, if so how do you change them i was thinking of relays similiar to ones in a car

Take a picture of it. I’m not familiar with 4 stroke engines but on some of the older Johnsons they are plug in relays. Chris V would know. They will either be a sealed rectangle, two squares, or something of the sort. Some motors will have a red, blue, green, and black wire.

yes, on that motor the wires are attached using a stud and nut
there are 2 of them
they should have 2 different color small wires
you can swap them, its just a little more work
make sure you take a picture to make sure you wire them correctly
