Garage Door Spring Repair?????

Anyone here ever replaced garage door springs? Closed my garage Friday and heard a loud bang and then my garage door opener howling in protest. I believe the torsion spring(s) on my door has bit the bullet. I have a Wayne Dalton door with the torsion springs enclosed in a tube. I have found the parts online for around $90 and figure I can do it for a lot less than a service call. Just wondering if anyone has tackled this before and has any pearls of wisdom.

Thanks

they are under a lot of tension, if not done correctly it will be painful

I did one a few years ago, the instructional videos are a must watch

ball up and get in there. you don’t need no stinkin youtube. whats the worst that can happen?

Tension has been relieved, tube has been removed and the broken spring has been identified. Now I have to order the parts and wait for them to get here. Then there is the matter of putting it all back together correctly. Dang, try opening a 16’ door without springs. I think I pulled something.

I called a professional and after watching him,i made the right decision…he should he a few injuries from things not going right…no thanks i happen to like all my fingers…

In an effort to save money my neighbor replaced his garage door spring. Unfortunately he lost his right index finger when the bar he was using to release the tension slipped. Life is full of choices…

When I built my garage/shop out back, I put in the garage door, torsion springs and all, by my self. it wasn’t that big of a deal. Just take your time and (I know this is a tough one) read and follow the directions. You’ll be fine.

Its all good. My torsion springs are inside a tube, not the kind on the outside that you tighten up by turning a bar a 1/4 turn each time. You wind them up by putting a 7/16" socket on your drill and go at it. It puts torque on the spring by a worm-drive and gear system. There is a handy gauge on the end of each tube and when you reach the magic number, you stop.

If something gruesome should happen, I’ll make sure my wife knows to post it here.

Bob, directions, really? Okay, I kind of cheated, found em on the www. Very helpful, already have everything apart and just have to wait for my parts to arrive.

Thanks all…even you Peapod.

Just so you know Peapod (as I know you have not been sleeping well with worry), I finished replacing the torsion springs on my garage door. It took me a bit because I was stupid and did not read all of the instructions. Once I uninstalled, reinstalled (after reading the online instructions), it was a piece of cake and operating like new. It was the cables and drum that gave me a fit. If you have the torsion springs that go inside a tube, I found good instructions. It was aggravating but, I saved about $300 doing it myself.

I was waiting for that Bob. Come on, real men don’t read instructions.

Until they realize they can’t figure out what in the heck they are doing.

Not a thing as far as my wife is concerned. She is a classy lady with simple tastes.
