I am VERY new to Kayak fishing and I wasn’t really using a “fishing” kayak but I had a very productive week fishing the surf at Garden City Beach just south of the pier. The schools of menhaden were THICK the first couple of days. Tuesday was only my second day out in a kayak and I only carried an ambassadeur reel on a casting rod with a clark spoon. I positioned myself near the schools and threw a spoon into them snagging a pogie and pulling him out to the edge of the school. Almost every time the menhaden was hit instantaneously by something. The sharks were very heavy around the schools but so were the nice bluefish. I caught 9 blues none under 2 lbs, and a couple in the 3-4 lb. range. I also caught two spanish(who hit the spoon without a pogie on it). One was somewhere around 5lbs. I know kayak fishing isn’t always this productive but it sure was a blast. I hooked into multiple sharks ( one of which I fought to the yak and cut the line as soon as I saw how big he was…lol) I am sure i’ll be asking a lot of questions about yak fishing but I am hooked!

It was absolutely amazing. Thanks. Water was insanely clear and it was something else to be able to watch fish feed on menhaden from above on a kayak. At one point the school opened up in the middle like a parting of the red sea and up through the middle comes a 6-7ft shark chasing a blue I had hooked. Crazy to watch that like something on the discovery channel. One hooked Kayak fisherman here.

Great report, where did you put in at, we have done it a few times but get run off by the lifeguards , we must be going to far north of the pier
I was putting in just south of the pier at the second Beach access just below the pier. We were staying in a house near there. No lifeguards down there.

I had a day very similar to you yesterday. I was using light tackle and caught some pretty big sharks. I tell you one thing… itll give you huge shoulders haha big workout
