I will be visiting Garden City for the 1st time while vacationing with the family next week. We are staying a couple of blocks north of the pier. I fish the surf during such trips but we have always vacationed south of Charleston in the past. My concern is that the beach will be more crowded then what I am accustomed to. In order to avoid traffic/swimmers what would be the latest I could fish in the morning or the earliest I could fish in the evening?
I have never fished with sand fleas. Is that worth looking into in these parts?
The jetties at Murrells Inlet look tempting but there appears to be a gated community so I’d assume there isn’t parking anywhere close. Any idea how long I’d have to walk to get there (I’d have a 5 and 8 yr old)?
Thanks in advance for any ■■■■■■■■ or suggestions. I know we will be close to the pier but I would prefer to fish with my toes in the sand.
Get in you car, and drive down to the last access point before the guard shack. No big deal. You are away from the masses down there, and will deal with less people in the water. Try and find you some fleas. They are either easy to find, or non existent. If not, use shrimp. Make sure to peel them. We have gotten into some nice Pompano, and whiting. You can maybe hook up with a redfish. Sharks are always around as well.
Thank you for the advice. I will definitely try to make it down there. I will be on the lookout for my 1st sand flea. That might actually be a better job for the kids.
Glad it was a vacation and not a fishing trip because the fishing left a lot to be desired. Used shrimp, mole crabs, mullet, etc. Caught mostly whiting the 1st morning out. After that the rest of the week was almost all pinfish with the occasional pup shark or stingray. Had one good run of about 100 yards but was using 50 lb mono leader that eventually gave. Actually had better luck near the pier than the couple times I fished farther south near structure. Not sure what was going on.
