Update it before you go chasing ghosts. I have seen software updates fix some weird issues. http://www8.garmin.com/support/agree.jsp?id=4633

Check the inline fuse in your 12v + wire for corrosion. Inline fuses tend to corrode over time.
I’ve heard of this problem on a couple newer Garmin models. They replaced the inline fuse holder and it fixed it. I would try the update first as stated above.
It would surprise me if it were a software issue, sounds like slight corrosion somewhere. Certainly check the fuse first. Put a multimeter on it. Measure resistance from one end of the fuse to the other. It should be less than one ohm, preferably zero.
Remove connectors from the rear of the unit. Rub a pencil eraser over the pins on both the unit and the cable that plugs in. This will remove any light corrosion if that’s the issue. Replace connectors and test.
Saltwater is constant maintenance. Good luck.

I second the inline fuse. Garmin has traditionally had problems with their fuse holders. Also, verify your ground connection.
