So, my wonderful wife bought this on black friday for my early Christmas present. I have it installed, cant wait to get out and try it out.
I wanted to see if anyone is using the make your own map feature?
Seems to me that will be a great feature as I’m constantly trying to figure out how to get back into the big shallow water of the waterway.
I got the 74SV several months ago and love it. The make your own map function is great.
Warning - don’t do like I did and assume the new model had the software update. First time I went to make a map I couldn’t find that function in the menus. Had to download and install the software update when I got home.

Thanks I will check. But I need to find a friend with windows, my wife and I are on Macs and according to the Garmin manual you need windows to get the updates. I’m gonna get out tomorrow ( well, later today) and see how it works.
I have that same unit. I haven’t used the map feature but I’ve been happy with the other features. Even tied it into my F150 for about $130 so now I get engine data. I also had to do the software update, it’s easy and only took a few minutes.
Bought a NMEA 2000 starter kit (they’re all the same despite being badged as Yamaha/Merc/etc. so just get the cheapest one). Then I got this to plug into the engine on one end and the NMEA on the other:
