Not striper fishing, but figured this may be the best place to ask this.
Have a Garmin 54DV and want to buy the Lake VU chip, but am wondering if I should get the LakeVU HD or the Ultra? Looks like the Ultra is a good bit more.
Will be mostly used on Clarks Hill and Savannah River for Bowfishing and some Bass/Bream fishing.
I run Garmin electronics and they are preloaded with LakeVü HD & BlueChart G2 maps. On Lake Murray and at Santee, the detail and resolution of the preloaded maps is impressive with 1’ contours. On Murray, it’s almost too much detail (I don’t necessarily need 1’ contour lines when trolling for rockfish) and with my 2 units, I have the ability to reduce the amount displayed so I’ve lowered it to help reduce clutter.
When I went to Clarks Hill the 1st time, I was really disappointed that the preloaded map didn’t have that same level of detail. So I purchased The U.S. LakeVü HD Ultra card (card# 010-C1110-00) and it has a lot more resolution and detail than the preloaded maps. It also includes 99 lakes that are defined as MaxDef. Clarks Hill, Russell, and Hartwell are 3 nearby. According to Garmin, MaxDef lakes are 10 times more accurate than any other lake map currently available. The chip also has the ability to display a satellite view or a combination of satellite and standard. There are other features as well such as 3D contour shading, sonar imagery, and side scan photos. I am extremely pleased with it and would definitely recommend it to anyone running a Garmin and thinking of buying another card to supplement the preloaded maps.
Your unit doesn’t come with preloaded lake maps, but the package my chip came in says that it is compatible with the EchoMap 50 series.
I wish that I had something like this when I bass fished all the time.
