gas from drain plug

the last two times i have pulled drain plug from my boat the liquid smelled of gas, hasn’t been that way before, not much liquid and it quits draining pretty quick, how much should i worry?

A LOT!!! A fire at sea can ruin your whole day! It dosen’t take much gas sloshing around in a confined are to create a explosive situation.

Yeah! You better be looking at fuel lines and hose clamps for a leak real quick!

Hoses, clamps, sending unit gaskets, and tanks should all be checked. I wouldn’t run the boat again until I figured out where that leak was coming from.

Yeah, but do you consider a dog to be a filthy animal? I wouldn’t go so far as to call a dog filthy but they’re definitely dirty. But, a dog’s got personality. Personality goes a long way.

1/4 cup of gasoline vapors = 1 stick of dynamite. Find it and fix it!! Don’t run it again until you do. Please:smiley:

Max, the first thing I would do is run my hand around any fuel hose connections and see if any are wet with gas! Might be real hard to find a very small leak. Take a screwdriver and tighten down all the hose clamps. Better yet, just replace the hoses and clamps with new ones. It’s a job you can do yourself, in about an hour! After you get them replaced, run the motor and check each connection to see if they are dry. Leave the bildge hatch cover open when you run it and have a fire extinguisher at the ready.

Check around your water seperator. When’s the last time it was changed?
I had one to rust from the inside out and started leaking.
By all means fix the leak before using the boat again, wouldn’t want to read about you in the news.

thanks to all for the insightful input, just like the song - not to great a making motors crank but pretty good at drinkin beer. however, this seems like something i could attempt. if i get in over my head any suggestions on someone near Mt Pleasant that could assist, had separator replaced this past spring, it is an old boat though. should i plan on replacing all three lines, input, output and vent???

thanks, again

I would replace all 3 at the same time! That way you know they all all good. The fill and the vent may be harder to get at, but doable. You may have to hire a long armed midget with a itty-bitty head to get some of them. West Marine or any boat place should have everything you need!

Turn off the batteries at the main. It the bilge kicks in and something should spark…

Check the spin on filter. Mine loosened once. I discovered it like you did. SCARY!!!

one more question, i am hoping it is hose leak, worst case is the fuel tank itself has leak, my thinking is that if it was the tank that had the leak, then it would not stop leaking till I was out of fuel, is this a correct assumption?

Not if the leak is near the top.

It ain’t no mystery…this beer’s history!

I recently had a tank swell on the top and the deformity caused the sending unit gasket to leak when it was full (but not once 3/4 or below).

I had this happen too. Very easy and inexpensive fix.

Did that happen on a plastic or alluminium tank?

Plastic - a 1999 18’ Sea Pro, believe it’s about a 35 gallon tank. They didn’t have to replace the tank, they just put in a new sending unit that was fitted to the deformed tank and tightened everything appropriately so it doesn’t leak. Was repaired in the spring and haven’t had any more issues with that (knock on wood). Barrier Island Marine diagnosed and repaired it, said they had been seeing a few of those this year from plastic tanks of that era. Something to check on if you have a plastic tank.

Replaced the tank in my 1988 HenryO this past Spring. The leaks were the vent hose (see http://old.charlestonfishing.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=119701
) and where the vent line fitting was welded into the top of the tank. The hose was lace and the weld and the fitting were full of pin holes. For a while, I’d get a little fuel odor in the bilge. Then, I’d get a whiff of gas every now and again just being around the boat. Then, I’d get a little tiny bit of liquid in the bilge, mostly the 2-cycle oil since the lighter components of the fuel would evaporate. I would only notice it when the tank was completely full and I’d get into some fairly rough chop that sloshed the gas around in the tank enough to get it up in that vent fitting. Finally, it got to the point that I found gas in the bilge. Not, just… “Hmmmm that smells like gas…”, but, gas in the bilge, a few cups. Scared me right into ripping the consoles out of the boat, opening up the floor to have a look.

Long story short… mine only leaked when it was full combined either with running through some choppy water or raising the trailer tongue up slightly. And, I had a real leak. Further, when I replaced the tank and was able to pull it out of the boat and get really good look at it, there were numerous pits in other areas of the tank that were not on the top. If any of those had given out, it would have filled my bilge with fuel and then seeped out into all the vo

i successfully replaced the fuel line from the tank to the separator and the fuel line from the separator to the prime bulb, how do i test to see if the solved the problem? i cannot get to the fill tube or vent line to check for leaks let alone replacing them. i cannot get to the tank without major, major above my skill set work. how do i test the fill tube, vent line and tank for leaks?

No way to test those parts of the system w/o getting to them. Was there indication of failure in the hoses you removed? If it wasn’t obvious, I’d assume you have NOT fixed the problem.

Does your floor have a removable panel covering you tank? Or, is it glassed in?
