Anyone used any of the epoxy gas tank sealers for repair of an old tank?
Mine isn’t leaking, and I have access to a new (old stock) one, or having a new one built. I think I’ll get off cheapest going the epoxy sealer route, but don’t want to select the wrong product.
I’m leaning towards the Caswell product.

Thanks
You want to pull the cap on the boat and rebuild it, but skate by on a cheep gas tank fix? If its a below deck tank, you might as well do it right and replace it.
If it is not pitted to bad use interlux 2000. Its a good 2 part epoxy paint.
Also not sure how the tank access is. You could get by with epoxy coating and replacing at a later time if you have access to pull the tank out.

Not about cheap this time, it’s about SMART.
If I can get away with repairing my tank and sealing it, and it being good to go for 20 more years, why would I not?
If I have to buy a 15 year old tank I can. If I have to have one made, I can.
Also, the tank sealers that I see have to have the excess dumped out…can’t do that with the tank installed.

You said that the tank needed repair. If you can repair it then go ahead. If it can be pulled out easily to be replaced in the future then repairing it would be a great option.
I would replace the tank to new and then seal it if it could not be easily pulled in the future. You are putting a lot of work in what you are doing. And $300 on a new tank is worth it to not have to cut the floor out again.

I actually didn’t say there was anything wrong with mine, but I see where I did say if I could get away with repairing it and sealing it I would be good. That is not the case. My tank is not leaking and not in any need of repair, other than being old and surely being able to benefit from being sealed up.
What’s the difference in an epoxy lined new tank and an epoxy lined old tank?

epoxy lined refers to an epoxy coating INSIDE the tank
an epoxy coated tank is epoxy on the OUTSIDE
we have sprayed epoxy coatings on the outside of plenty of older fuel tanks that were solid but in need of a little more protection
we have used several different coatings, and since they are not exposed to UV light, I haven’t really seen an difference in the performance
