gator and red

Fished a saltwater pond/lagoon this weekend. fished from the bank. There was a nice sized gator hanging about 40 yards away the whole time.
finally hooked a nice over slot red and gator starts cruising over. It was kind of a race trying to get the fish in the net before the gator got there. Anyone ever have a gator steal their fish?

Might try to get a video next time

yes, had to take out a nuisance gator in a pond on johns island for that reason… we stocked the pond with landowner’s permission, and a 5 footer moved in and set up shop. he’d come right up to my bare feet every time i caught a fish, and whipping him in the snout with the rod tip did nothing… so we pulled a permit and ate him.

have also caught a 6’ in the cast net accidentally while catching bait, that was a tricky situation.

I’ve not had it happen to me, but they’ve come after my reds before.

That happens to me a lot in my neighborhood.

I don’t mind them unless they go underwater!

6 foot gator in the castnet… now that would be a tricky situation!

“mr keys”

I’d let him keep the net. I hate getting a sting ray out of a cast net. Can’t imagine even a small gator.

I had a 10’ swim by me one day in the mosquito lagoon.

That cracks me up every time I read it! We have ducks galore in the neighborhood. Crap everywhere. Grab a couple permits and give me a shout! I’ll pet 'em, you whack 'em!

I had a similar situation to that when fishing a pond on kiawah on my way home from work. Always kept these in the truck 2 rods, cast net, bucket for bait, tackle box and net. Hooked up w/ a big red and I could see the gators in the pond but didn’t think anything of it as I pulled this red in. Too big for the net, so I towed him around the dock to get the hook out. I was on thinking it was clear of the gators…WRONG!!! Gator underneath the dock. Literally 5 feet from getting him on the bank and getting the hook out all hell broke lose… needless to say the 40 inch red didn’t make it, shi# my pants and I’ll never try that again…

This guy grabbed a trout on the ICW. Excuse the audio, wife thinks its “sad” and the 2 yr old is whining to go home.

I’ve had the same gator eat about 12 largemouth bass over these past two years fly fishing in freshwater ponds in northern Mount Pleasant.

I’m so salt life I get land sick.
