We had a 6’ Gator swimming circles around the boat… 3/4 the way out, on the inside south jetty, on a incoming tide. Is this normal? It was swimming against the current out to sea???

Circles around your boat? Did he stick out his gator thumb, if a gator has a thumb, and ask hitch a ride back to the inshore?

Most species of crocodile have glands in their mouths to expel salt from their systems. Alligators have these glands but they don’t work. They can swim in salt water however, they do need to retreat to fresh water on a regular basis to rinse the salt out of their system. Alligators prefer fresh or brackish water. A gator at the jetties was probably lost or a bit “Touched”. That being the case he really was looking for a ride in your boat out of the salt water.

Have heard that they will seek out salty water to rid themselves of skin parasites, if they spend too long in the salt they go blind.

I guy I knew who was stationed on the CG cutter Rambler (the old inshore bouy tender with the barge attached) said when they ran through Wappoo cut he would see dozens of them rolling in their prop wash. We used to ski there !!Yikes!!
