Gator Hunting Question/Opinon

Buddy got drawn for the S Coastal region and spent some time hunting last Sat in the river below Lake Marion. We ended up not finding one worth taking (actually passed on a decent one early in the day). The question is whether to try Marion next time? I am fairly comfortable in the river with our boat (22’ bay) but have never spent any time on Marion. Not planning on flying around the lake at full speed but dont want to tear up the boat at idle either.

Does anyone think its worth taking a stab in the dark at Marion or sticking with the river? Were not exactly rookies since this is our fourth time but any other advise or hunting tips would be greatly appreciated. Thanks guys.

if you drive your boat like that you will be gator bait:smiley:

Hunting, fishing, and poker are my sports. Work when necessary.

I thought Marion was in the Midlands unit, not the S. Coastal.

moultrie is mid coastal not south coastal…check your zone map or get burned big time

Been on moultrie my whole life , some of the biggest gators can be found in what I call the upper part of moultrie behind sandy beach and around angels landing campground. That whole area is infested with the monster gators you guys are looking for. Registered my self this year and did not get a tag. Good. Rule of thumb is if you stay in the middle and don’t drive like and idiot you’ll be ok. Best thing to do is pull behind sandy beach and act like your fishing they have become a little timid so give them a min. Lot of time they,ll be right there on the bank in the sun lots of them big ones . Good luck be more than happy to help guide some one for free!!!

Not sure if moultrie is in your zone or not but if it is there are plenty of gators worth taking in lake moultrie

My first post is a mess. Meant moultrie and middle coastal. Thanks for the help HC, thats exactly what i was looking for and will probably give it a shot. I have a full boat right now but if I have some space free up I’ll definitely let you know.

Good luck curious to see how u guys do.

Well the advise was good, huting was bad. Saw some pretty decent gators including one over 11ft. Super spooky tho, could only get into casting range on one of them.

Sorry to hear that. Figured you guys would have some pretty good luck back up in that area. You know what they say what’s for you is for you! Anyway good luck hope you guys land a monster soon.

weighted treble hook, 80lb braid and a surf rod and if you can see them- they’re in range
