How bad are the gators with yaks? I had a buddy that used to Yak in Florida all the time and saw some pretty big gators but they never botherd him. I plan on yakking the cooper around bushy park, should I be concerned about them? What is the best way to defend yourself, besides the obvious leaving them alone…
I don’t lie about the fish I catch… I just remember them bigger…
I was out there today and a big SOB made my hair stand up. It was a few feet longer than my yak.
By myself, way up a creek, no gun or cell… I think statistically, they ain’t much of a chance of you getting eaten, but there has to be a first time and probably make in on Headline News!
I always wantd to be on TV I was just wondering if anyone has had any problemns with gators. In a small boat we never had problems, we gave them room and they stayed away.

I guess that is use number 12 for the Cajun Anchor… I got a line on a yak, I am going to look at it this morning and hopefully be heading home with it, sounds like a too good to be true deal… I’ll keep ya posted

I was in my families 35 acre pond a few years ago assesing the weed problem we were experiencing. I was in a 16 jon boat and had a log stuck under the foot of the motor so I bent down, removed the log and bent over the port side of the boat to take a close look at the weed problem. My vision was focused at the surface but something caught my attention and I focused below the surface and it was about a 11-12 footer that had slowly risen from the depths and was about 18 inched under. His head was within arms reach of my head!!! I stood up with amazement and sighed…He lunged under the boat and rose to the surface on the other side adn began a very aggressive side to side with back raised very high above the water!! I have and do sepnd a lot of time in the wood my profession and have never been so scared for my life. The gator intended to eat me I have no doubt!!!
Stay clear of the large ones but for the most part, they want nothing to do with you.
I never knew gators got so big up Santee until one day one almost as long as my boat rolled off the bank as I was trolling by. Up until that point, I would only see their eyes at night, but after that trip I don’t think I ever made another up or down the river without a Colt 357 Mag Revolver. Probably wouldn’t have helped much because that gun was bigger than I was at the time, but it would have given me a fairer chance.
you won’t have a problem as long as you take someone in a diffrent yak with you.(just make shure that you can paddel faster than the other person with you and you will be fine.
Sounds good flats… when do ya wanna go fishin? I am going to try and hit bushy park on Friday afternoon. It’s gonna be my first time fishing from my new yak… I can’t wait.

Went out today on the Cooper River just North of Pimlico. Gators were everywhere. I’m finding out the gators aren’t too afraid of a yak. One (~6’) actually raised his head and tail in effort to look bigger I guess. Came past one spot where I felt I was in a Tarzan movie. Several gators dove in with an uproar and the beast pictured below ran/swam through the reeds about 15’ away and swam out ahead of me, never went under. If he wasn’t as long as the MR14 then he was dang close. Pretty cool, but a little unnerving as well. Did catch a couple small bass and a 4lb blue cat that I managed to lose while trying to take a picture - duh.
