Does anyone plan on going out to GCR anytime soon for some crappie fishing? I have thought about it but i’m kind of hesitant after my last trip out there and the amount of alligators and their size/proximity to me lol. Maybe with the water cooling down they will start to become less active. Any thoughts?

I started to try it yesterday but the bait shop hadn’t gotten in any minnows yet (really? seriously it’s late September, no minnows?). I have plenty of jigs though, but when I got up yesterday morning my sinus infection said “no siree”, so I slept in.
With water cooling down, they will become MORE active in my experience, probably until the end of October or mid Nov.
I wouldn’t sweat the gators unless you are prone to tipping. I see yaks out there once in a while anyhow. I’m in a 14’ jon though lol.

lol yea my kayak is very stable and I’ve never come close to tipping but something about being 6 inches off the water and seeing a 14 foot alligator next to me makes me very uncomfortable. I wouldn’t mind it if there were a few out there but I counted 14 in just 2 hours! I was nervous about reaching my hand off the kayak and pulling up my anchor lol. I’m used to fishing them in deeper water where they’re suspended but from what I’ve heard here is that they will be in shallow water. I also hear that fish don’t taste good out of the GCR but I don’t know if thats accurate or not.

I haven’t seen anything close to 14ft in there this year, I think the big boys were largely hunted out a while back.
The taste of fish from the GCR is because of the blackwater characteristics of it. The crappie should taste just fine, I’ve eaten a LOT of crappie out of dirtier farm ponds and they tasted clean and nice.

It is the alligator that you don’t see that you need to worry about. That being said, alligators are my favorite animal! I love them! I’d go with you as long as my husband’s crazy schedule allows it.
It was definitely bigger than my 12 foot kayak lol. Sarah, I thought about it, well have to plan a trip out there. We will have to wait until duncans gets minnows. I wouldn’t mind picking up a couple new cheap freshwater spinning combos too.
