I will be trolling around off the beaches this summer in my kayak, looking for kings…

I’m only going to carry two rod and reels - I have two 7’ Star Stellar boat rods (med/hvy) for trolling. These are spinning setups - one has a Shimano Baitrunner 8000 and the other a Okuma Avenger 65 that has a baitfeeder feature too…the Okuma will hold around 350 yards of 20-lb mono. I might have to load the Shimano with braid since the mono capacity is lower. Do you think these are capable for catching kings? Thanks…

They will work fine but I would probably opt for braid since you can have a lot more line capacity

With a king you need to let it run or you will pull the hooks being in a yak you will not be able to chase the fish so more line would be a plus

If I were you I would spool the Baitrunner with 50lb. braid so you can fit 300 yards, just try and have around 300+ yards on your reel

I am also looking into taking the kayak off of the beaches this year. All my gear is for inshore except for some older conventional setups. I have been thinking about getting the new spinfisher v with the live bait feature. I was wondering what is the ideal conditions(wind/water temp) for the kings to come close to the beach.

Thanks for the advice…one question - could I get by with lighter braid? (20 or 30-lb vs. 50)

I wouldn’t use something as light as 20 in my opinion, but 30 should be fine, I have yet to break 30 on some of my inshore setups

Lewis- if your keeping drag light and not horsing the king to the boat, I can’t see why you couldn’t do 30# PP. Let me know when your going out though man, I’d like to give it a shot maybe even past the breakers for sharks and Spanish and maybe a poon or king of were lucky!
