Hey guys, My apologies if this question has already been asked though i did not see it.
I am moving Charleston area this summer. I grew up shore fishing for striper on long island, and spent the last 4 years living in Hawaii shore fishing for GT and Bonefish.
I have a question about what type of gear i should keep/purchase for the charleston area. I am planning on keeping two xtraheavy rods and conventionals if i want to try sharking from shore.
As for lighter spinning gear what is the most common/universal size if going for the usual suspects…reds, drums, pompano, trout. I was thinking of keeping a 7.5 ft with a 5000 sized real and maybe keeping/upgrading a 10 ft with 6000-8000 sized reel. would the second option be overkill for surf fishing. I was thinking the reels could also be used for boating applications.
Any help is appreciated.
Thanks.
Nearly everyone here is more knowledgeable than me but, for reds, trout, etc…, a 5000 is really bigger than you need. I fished a 4000 until recently and switched to a 3000 which will land just about anything inshore and is far more fun (at least I find it to be). Standby, there will be more experienced folks along shortly I am sure.
3000 is plenty for almost everything inshore
You’ll want to keep 5000 with the long rod for fishing the surf…that’s a sweet setup for bull reds & sharks.

Sounds like you have a good feel for it already. A lot of folks carry 2-3 rods surf fishing the area. I always spike a 10-12’ with a 6-8k reel for soakin big baits for whatever wants to give me a thrill. I hold a 3-4000 on a 7’ fishing the suds for meat fish. I also keep a 7 - 7.5 ready rigged with a spoon or gotcha in case some schooling fish pop up while I’m there. At times I will spike the way out big rod and a 7-8’ rod in breakers. I usually always hold one for in close. And the schooling rod - if you ever don’t have one ready that’s when you will have them boil the water like piranhas. I almost always carry one. Twice when I didn’t this happened!![]()

If I were you i’d put that 5000 on a 10ft. for bull reds and black drum. And if you want some real fun get like a 12ft. Penn Prevail and match it with a battle 8000 and use it to catch sharks. I generally throw out my 10ft. rod wth cut mullet or blue crab for bull reds, my bait caster with finger mullet or mudminnows for trout, reds, and flounder, a light 4000 sized reel with shrimp for small panfish, and sometimes ill bring out my senator and liveline a horse mullet on a balloon to catch shark, Ive only tried it 3 times with no luck but I’ll catch the biggun!!! No gear is really to small or big for surf fishing, thats the beauty of it, you can go out and catch a stringer of whiting, or you can paddle out senator 16/0 for monster hammerheads. If I were you I’d just get the 10ft. for now, go out a few times to see if its even the right fit for you, good luck!!!
oh and my 12ft. prevail came i last week for my tld for my shark setup so I’ll test that in the spring!!!
I’m so salt life I sued google earth for giving away all of my fishing spot’s.
Thanks for all the ■■■■■■■■. I will most likely keep the 5000 and keep a smaller maybe 3000 on the 7.5 for small game. I have a few 13 foot xtra heavy conventional poles rated for 60-80# that im going to keep for sharks. Shark catch is more of a nuisance here when going for gts but i always have fun with anything that pulls hard…
Again thanks for the scoops.
