hi, my gel coat on my canoe is in desperate need of a restoration. it has oxidation, and scratches big and small, mostly surface scratches. does anyone know of a good gel coat restorer/ repair kit and where i can get it.
thanks
3m rubbing compound followed by a good waxing. If you use a power buffer just be careful not to burn thru the gell coat with it as a lot of canoes have a very thin layer of gelcoat and not a lot of thickness in the layup to dissapate the heat produced from power buffing and one can end up warping the fiberglass. West Marine carrys it as well as gelcoat scratch repair kits that allow you to custom match the color (sort of). Clean out the gouges, mix it up, fill gouges as smoothly as possible, let cure, carefully wet sand to 400 or 600 grit and then use rubbing compund, then wax. Viola! looks like new! well, sort of:)

See if this helps. It even has a ‘chick’ to do the intro:
I like Top’s comment about buffers creating heat and possibly warping the fiberglass. Even hand compounding can burn your fingers.
