Gelcoat repair

I came back from Islamorada with this crack. It looks like a void in the fiberglass with cracked gelcoat. Can ya’ll recommend someone to fix this? How about it Cracker Larry?

Another view.

How old is that boat, what type of warranty? Might want to see if the manufacture will cover that under warranty. I am dealing with NauticStar on some issues with my boat right now and its 4 years old. I will say they arent very responsive but its worth they try if it looks like a defect.

Anybody?

That’s a manufacturing defect, a void in the fiberglass. I would contact them.

I really suck with color matching gel coat, you don’t want me to do that, need somebody who knows how.

Thanks everybody. The boat is a 2003 Scout 185 SF, so out of warranty. I did not hit anything and there is no evidence of any impact. I just want a quality repair.

I don’t know if this helps. For where you’re located.

This guy did a great job for me when I chipped the gelcoat. Also thought the price was reasonable.

A couple of other people I checked with also had great experiences.

He’s in the Aiken/Augusta area.

He was meticulous on matching the color and got it perfect

Thanks, Flicker. I am in Greenville and don’t mind traveling for a good job. I have a call into Scout right now.

I can do it. I’m in Charleston. Fixed a lot of gelcoat on Scout boats. Tallsailmarine.com

Thanks, Looper. I may haul it to you. What would be my estimated down time?

5 days to be safe. I would grind back the whole void then glass and refill. Looks like the millennium white is the color match by the picture. Booked until mid next week and adding more every day. Feel free to pm me your contact info or just call.

Worked on many like this. I see most voids are in the chines. Gelcoat is sprayed into the mold and then glass is laid or sprayed into place. Sometimes the person laying the glass does not roll it out completely, thus creating a void.

I could also talk you through it if you want to try yourself.

Loopervet, PM sent.

I had the same problem with my 282. I drug it back to scout and they fixed it for me and they were happy to do it.

Unfortunately, my boat is out of warranty. I called Scout, spoke to a guy in customer service. I made it clear that I did not expect warranty work, but would they recommend someone. He said he would check and let me know. That was over a week ago…not one word from Scout.
