General Fishing info

Hello everyone. Newbie here. To the site and to salt water fishing in general. Having spent may years fishing freshwater in Texas and New Mexico, I have relocated to Heaven on earth here in beautiful Charleston. Recently purchased a 21’ Sea-Pro with a 150 Yamaha 2 stroker. I am looking for any and all information about fishing the nearshore and offshore. Thanks, in advance to all. Also, ready and willing to crew on your boat to learn more.

your best bet is to spend a few hours on here reading reports and taking notes. there is lots of info to be had, especially this time of year when everybody is getting back into the swing of things heavily. don’t be afraid to go back a few pages reading reports and posts. welcome to Charleston and good luck fishing!

Welcome to Chas’n, Tex.

Bonzo’s got some good pointers for you, and its all right here at your finger tips. If you are a good freshwater fisher, you’ll catch on here in no time.

My initial advice would be very familiar with your rig/boat and get some good maps, so after you’ve read all you can stand, you can get around out there some ‘then get back home’. Just be extra careful at mid to low tides around here, especially on new/fill moon phases.

Idea, I’ll trade some local fishin for some Texas duck hunting!!

Good Luck

I’ll show you everything you need to know for free but it will probably take several long trips out on your boat. Oh, and I drink Sam Adams or Blue Moon.

Thanks fellas. And I may take you up on that offer. As for the ducks, you are on your own. Whitetails, Mule Deer, Oryx and quail and dove I’m your man. I have never hunted duck though. Seen tons of 'em, but have yet to drop a hammer on one.

when scouting new areas I would recommend going at low tide rising. if not familiar with saltwater then pluff mud is gonna blow your mind. with a rising tide if you get stuck you’ll only be stuck for a few minutes til the water rises. creeks look VERY different low tide vs. high tide. Get at least a small handheld GPS that marks your tracks so you can follow it out while exploring. most importantly is to know your safety and fish regulations. cruise SCDNR’s website. and don’t be afraid to ask questions. only three ways to learn about this stuff; either be shown, ask somebody or do it yourself.

Bonzo my daddy used to say that there are 3 ways to learn. Some of us learn by seein’ and some od us by hearin. And then there’s some us got to pee on the electric fence for ourselves. Somehow I always fell in that last category.

If you can afford it, hire one of the fine guides in your area to teach you some of the ropes and techniques used around the lowcountry. Don’t be afraid to ask questions. However, leave your GPS at home.

Yeah, but do you consider a dog to be a filthy animal? I wouldn’t go so far as to call a dog filthy but they’re definitely dirty. But, a dog’s got personality. Personality goes a long way.

Texas, I love ALL kinds of hunting. The birds overall around here are petty difficult to get consistently w/out owning or leasing a good bit of land. I enjoy ducks the most, despite that… then probably dove/turkey, and a deer evey now and again.
Lots of pigs around here now the last number of years.

I lived in Natchichoches, LA for a summer, and travel to AR and MS when I can for a duck too.

Otherwise, I spend what time I can on the water.
Hey, plenty of folks on here are glad to assist, or at least make a little fun of each other! Hope you have a good time.

  1. hire a guide

  2. tow = time on water, no substitute

  3. learn the art of guide scouting [ok that was kinda a joke, but i still do that]

  4. if 1-3 don’t work out, find Capers Island on a hot day. hang out there. 1-3 won’t matter

  5. use the search feature on this site. hoppy and fritz have bunches of good, specific info on trout & spottail

OR you can stop by one of the fine local tackle shops and chat it up with the associates. All the local area shops provide great service and will help you get you pointed in the right direction.

Fishing on the bottom is like having sex with the lights turned off. It feels good… but I wanna see it.
