General Help Please

Fished this weekend at the 60’ and all we caught was BSB which is good but looking to expand. Not looking for numbers or anything like that but can i catch snapper/grouper there? we were using squid, do we need to change bait or tactics? Or do we need to be deeper like say the commanche or y73? any thoughts would be greatly appreciated for our rookie crew.

Its possible but to get on them I would go 90 or greater however its not worth the gas money cause ya cant keep um.

There are grouper and snapper shallower and deeper than the 60 but specific baits and precise anchoring are required- if you are not right over the fish…you aren’t going to catch them and that applies anywhere you fish- local captains like mark brown and others put you on those fish b/c they are masters at anchoring and have much experience- good luck

Exactly. The other problem with squid is that you can't get them past the BSB's, triggers, vermillions, and porgies of this world. Grouper can be very passive when it comes to feeding compared to the others. While diving under a crew fishing, I've seen squid descending down to the bottom and it rarely makes it all the way before it get's attention. Many times, a handful of the fish I mentioned will rocket up off of the reef and meet it 20' off the bottom.

Skinnee…that gets me thinking about something I want to try later this year. How about a chum bag full of squid suspended about 30 feet above your fishing spot get the BSB out of the way and then dropping down your live bait or jig for the grouper. May cut down on the BSB?

At this point the only thing that is going to cut down on the BSB is to open it back up with the 15 fish limit.
I don’t think the chum bag will help you. How far away from the bag will you be able to get your bait?
Kinda like setting a bucket of $^&* 15 feet away from you to try and keep the flies off of you. In reality you draw the flies from a mile away to within 15 feet.

Don’t know if that makes sense or not, but that is the way I see it.

Thx for the tips guys, makes sense because I was bringing up 2 BSB at a time and a third would follow all the way up to the top several times.
