George Poveromo -Saltwater Show

Did anyone else see the show about a month ago where he was daytime swordfishing in Fla. and got snatched out the boat? It was pretty freaky. He was fighting a fish with a stand-up harness. Long bout with first fish and pulled hook at the boat. Went couple more hours on second fish and finally got it next to the boat. Fish was estimated around 300#+. When the fish saw the boat it turned and made a dive. The camera man made a quick move to the other side of the CC and in a second his tail went over the side. He slipped on wet floor when fish made the dive. He did not have a safety line one the reel or himself to the boat. He had one arm on the rod and one with a death grip on the side of the boat. Fish was screaming the drag in a dive. He managed to loosen the drag. And capt managed to un-clip the rod from the harness and stick rod in a holder. From the two fish fight and holding on for life he was done. Capt had to pull him in the boat. Scared the crap out of him and the capt. Was a close call - he said later that was the first time he had fought a large gamefish without having rod and harness secured. He was shaking like a leaf.

I talked to him at length about that…said it scared the **** out of him. He will always sear a release knife around his neck now when fighting big fish. He has an honorary membership to the “under water wiremans club”.

“Back home we got a taxidermy man. He gonna have a heart attack when he see what I brung him”

It goes without saying but it’s a good idea on a big fish to have someone else back up the wireman with a quick cut knife. Pull up Big Oh fishing on u tube and see how the pros handle the cockpit and the safety measures they use every time.

Rope on the reel lug…NEVER on the harness.
