Georgetown Hole 1/31/16

We had been itching for weeks to catch some wahoo. This weekend gave us perfect weather to go. Loaded up and left Georgetown in the dark. arrived at GT Hole about 7:15. Water temp was 69.5 degrees. We put a wahoo spread out with a couple of 6" Horizon tuna bullets on the long rigger and shotgun just in case we ran across anything else. Nothing for about 30 minutes and the shotgun goes off. Glen works it to the boat. Nice 20 pound blackfin to start the morning. Worked a little to the north and picked up a dolphin. Several more passes around the same hump and BAM! Shotgun, long rigger and long flat all go off. Managed to get two of the three to the three to the boat. Two more fat blackfin. After our triple hook up the tuna vanished only to be replaced by boneheads. After picking through a few of those the bite shut down. By then it was about noon. I had heard the wahoo bite had been around 1:00 to 2:00pm the week before for the boats that fished the scarp. We were talking about turning southwest and working down the break and the long rigger starts screaming. Wahoo for sure. Webster is on the rod this time and as he’s bringing the fish in the hook pulls. Another brief hiatus and the planer rod goes off. This one didn’t get off though. Glen puts a 45 lb. wahoo in the boat. Make a swing around and another pass over the same rise we fished all day. Then the shotgun goes off again. This time it’s different though. This fish made a huge run to start. No other fish other than a wahoo makes a run like that. I was looking at spool through what was left of the mono on the TLD 30 and yelling for Webster to turn the boat so I could get a few wraps back on the reel. we managed to catch up to the fish but it still took about twenty minutes to bring it to gaff. Glen and Webster manage to wrestle it over the gunnel and it hit the deck with a thud. All I could think was holy cow that’s a big wahoo! What makes it more amazing was that he bit the small bullet on mono and we still managed to get him to the boat! Epic day and a great

Nice!

Great start to the season. We experienced the Blackfin bite also a couple weeks ago.

Nice job guys.

That’s a nice wahoo. Haven’t seen one that size in about four years or so ago. Nice wahoo!

Awesome report, wonderful catch on a heck of a fish!!!

Keeping my eyes and ears open…and trying to learn.

Solid hook placement on that fella!
