Get the salt out

Just wondering how you guys clean your reels after a days fishing. Ive always pour some dawn in them and spray until the suds disappear. There’s gotta be a cheaper way dawns expensive and the wifes fussing about me stealing her dish detergent.

I use salt-off or salt-away but don’t go enough to worry about the cost. Can get both in WM but salt away is the brand, the salt off I think is their brand.

Ive tried that its the same as silicone liquid wrench. Ive just always be afraid that the fish can taste it.

I just rinse with low pressure fresh water and my reels last a long time. Every now and then ill clean the more expensive ones with penn reel cleaner. Frequently oil the line roller on spinning reels and the worm gear on bait casters.

I’ve always rinsed lightly w/ fresh water. Lately I’ve been trying real magic from Walmart at $7 per can. Seems to work well.

I just wash mine off with a hose after every trip unless a reel gets dunked in the saltwater… Then I will take it apart and soak it over night, dry it off, oil it up and its good to go.
I have had few issues with reels since going to the Penn Battles, more of the reel is sealed off to keep salt from building up in it.
Also, don’t forget to clean off the eyes on your rod. I’ve seen a rod eye break off with a fish on because the metal had corroded…

Fresh water rinse of reel and entire length of rod. Few times per season (or after a harsh trip or before long storage), I give them a spray of Penn reel cleaner and protectant once they dry from water rinse.

Light mist of water after every use, turn spinning reels upside down to drain, spray with WD-40 from time to time - and have the reels totally cleaned/re greased every other year or so.

I have some 40+ year old Penn Senators that have been mine for 20+ years - this is all I do to them.

Thanks for the ideas.

Definitely agreed with washing the eyes.

I have a brand new Ugly Stick that has rusted eyelets. I give my 15 year old Ugly Stick the exact same process, and have for years, and it’s not rusted.

I love those my ugly stick intercoastal. Best feeling rod ive ever owned.

I also, turn the knob on the handle while rinsing it to keep salt from settling in there and making them not spin easily.

Believe it or not, I’ve got a friend that swears by WD-40 or PB blaster, says fish are attracted to it.

The only thing that I do know for sure will repel fish is bug repellent.

That said plenty of fresh water rinse down and a yearly thorough cleaning and greasing.

So, does he spray his baits or lure down with it? I dont know about that. And I agree on the bug spray. That stuff taste horrible.

Lightly spray with a hose, eyelets and all. Then I disk the reels in a 5 gallon bucket and toy with the drag to makesure the moving parts get wet. I’ve been meaning to grab somereel cleaner though.

believe it or not but wd-40 is actually made with fish oil so I can believe that it could an attractant

Yea I was taught to rinse lightly, pat dry, and then rub it down with some WD40 on a cloth/paper towel. I just started using “reel butter” that i got from wal mart. Took apart my old Penn SV4000(not a good reel) and put the reel butter on it cause it was squeaky. 2 trips later it’s seized up. Wont reel at all. So don’t buy that crap. Just got a battle 3000 for replacement. Heard they were pretty durable. Loving it so far.
