Getting dirty in the spartina....

Oh goodness, its been too long. After talking about it on and off for the last few weeks with my buddy, we finally made time on Saturday to go look for tails in the tall grass. It never gets old, the romance of wading through the grass near sunset, snails in your old beaten up tennis shoes, the gnats that must thrive in the shallows, the smell of the fresh pluff mud as you take the first step off the boat and onto the playing field. It was us against them and today they had the upper hand.

Fish galore, so many tailers and cruisers in abundance. At one point, I had five tails within my eyeline no more than 80 feet away. Did they really win? Perhaps its that old saying that’s ever so true, “It’s how you play.” I’m blessed to live here, I’m blessed to be able to gain so much joy from the simple things. Dear Lord, please don’t ever let me stop chasing those jugbellies in the spartina. Its as rewarding today as it was years ago. I hope I never forget.

I’d be interested to hear how that Zebco does on a feisty spottail.

Pretty sure that is a Penn 27.

LOL, Zebco!!

He actually hooked two. One spit hook and one break off due to drag being too tight.

Great photos! I mainly wade on hard bottom that I find around oyster banks, which isn’t always easy to find. I don’t usually fish the hard bottom in the grass, but would like to try. What are some good artificial baits to use around the grass? I usually fish a jerk bait, so I am assuming that would work just fine?

Narcosis

Awesome pics. I gotta get down there and try that sometime. The only time I ever did it, I did not have a clue what I was doing. I could see fish but didn’t seem to have anything there were interested in. Thanks for sharing. Is the golden tone of of the 1st and 3rd pic natural or a filter? Really cool effect.

If you put it in front of their face on the flat, they will eat just about anything plastic. Caught them on rootbeer, electric chicken, white, green grubs, watermelon, pretty much anything.

Anything twitching through the grass gets their attention. I might change up to a lighter color if the water is dirty or vice versa. If they see it, they usually charge it.

This is the difference in looking into the sun, which I always try not to do, and having the sun at your back. Having the sun at your back in most scenarios offers clear well represented images. I don’t normally like the backlit pictures, but this fish would not let me get to the other side of him so I took what he gave me. And I kind of like the way this turned out, so I kept it.

When are you going to let me put you on a redfish in the grass?

Nice frames and poetic words. I’ll always choose back light during the golden hour if at all possible.
