If someone were interested in getting a six pack license or higher but had no boat…how is it possible to get the experience needed for them? Are there jobs out there that correlate?
I’m afraid you’re out of luck unless you’ve been operating someone else’s boat this whole time.
A potential OUPV licensee requires a minimum of 360 days of vessel operating experience. Of those 360 days, at least 90 of those days must have occurred over the past 3 years. Any vessel operating experience gained prior to 15 years of age will not be counted.
If I’m not mistaken, anyone can take the captain’s class (Sea School, etc.), but that alone will not get you a license. Not only do you need the minimum experience, but you must be able to prove the experience through official documentation (dates, hours, HIN and Doc numbers for each boat, etc)
Right. That’s what I figured but I was hoping there was something out there that made the license accessible for those without a boat. Thanks for the reply though.
To answer your question more directly, I’m not aware of any correlating work or experience that could take the place of vessel operation hours/days. I could be wrong though.
No worries. I had more than enough experience required, but going back and getting the documentation was a pain in the rear end. Going back over every fishing trip, boat delivery, memorial day weekend, and ICW trip took some doing. Ever since then I’ve kept a log in my phone of every trip and boat I operate so I can save a headache when I upgrade.
