I’m brand new to saltwater fly fishing, so be gentle. I’m going to be needing some flies (I’ve heard Clouser minnows are great in saltwater) and info as to where I should get those would be great. I will also be needing some information on how to find good saltwater fly fishing spots. Will troughs work as well on the fly as on bait? I’ve never (successfully) fished artificials in the surf before, so I don’t have any experience to draw on there.
Not sure about shops up towards Summerville, but Low Country Fly Shop here in Mount Pleasant is a great store with the employees having a wealth of knowledge. Super friendly guys and willing to talk to you and answer questions. I too just bought a fly fishing outfit but have yet to use it b/c I am unsure of where to even start.

Hurricane, I have yet to use that set up I purchased from you. Is that not pathetic? I have no clue as to what I’m doing in saltwater when it comes to fly fishing.

The best time of the year for targeting redfish on the fly is rapidly approaching. You want to look for flats that are rather large and are less than two feet deep at low water. The reds congregate on these flats in the late fall, schools exceeding 500 fish are common if you know where to look.
I am down in Bluffton and I can’t help you with any info about the CHS area, but you might consider hiring one of the many qualified guides up there. He will show you what to look for as well as give advice on fly patterns. My personal “go to” fly is the gold Dupree spoon fly, although crab and shrimp patterns work as well.
You might look at Google maps and NOAA charts to get an idea of possible flats.
Hello. I’m new to fly fishing and was wondering if anyone could put me on any spots to walk around James Island? I have marsh booties and am willing to get dirty. Thanks.
It’s also a great time to target trout OTF. Use a smallish clouser with bead eyes or small lead eyes. I like white/brown colors. Cast it upcurrent of structure and let the current sweep the clouser past. Give it very small strips to give it some action.
