Fished two days with the Tag-a-Giant crew, on a local charter boat. Hooked two fish, great experience except for one incident. One of our brother fishermen from the lowcountry, cut across the transom while we had a fish on. Hung our lines and we lost the fish. We had been trying to wave him off and call on the radio. He did not have it on. Please turn the VHF on, most boats are on 18 up there. Listen to the chatter. These huge fish take alot of line and they need room to fight. The charters also run their riggers waaaaaaay back 300 - 1000’. The captains are great to talk to and will help everyone they can. Just turn the radio on and watch the other boats. I wanted to post this because when the boat came by, all you could see was “Charleston, SC” on the side. No one was mad on board either boat, but it could have been nasty. Good luck, catch’em up.

Wow! That’s admirable…
SCG
“Quit being nasty!!!”
doesn’t surprise me…
When it happened I expected the worst. The captain told the guy what to do and what he had done, when we were alongside him. No harsh words were spoken. We parted ways and that was that.

Even at the Georgetown Hole this past weekend, the first weekend of January, there was one of the bigger boats that ran very close to our way back line.
I can only imagine how tight it is up in NC chasing the bluefins.
I must be strung to tight, because I would have been furious. Having a BFT on, paying for the charter and some dill-hole cuts me off. It must not have been one of those monsters for no one to be mad.
Heck, I’m pissed for you and wasn’t even there.

Mola, you’re a better man than me. i was asked to mate a “make a wish” giant trip for a blind fella (Russ) who “wished” to catch a giant tuna. A slow day in the mud hole off RI, releasing a smallish Mako after eating one of our live bluefish, and having a larger one on for awhile till he broke off. As the capt. called the day, we hooked up to a 300# tuna. Russ was having the time of his life for nearly an hour, when “brother fisherman” came in close to see how we were doing. “Carpet F Bombs” were flying there way. Nuten funier den a blind guy telln u where to go. They pulled away, and we got her to the bote. Got the whole thing on vid somewhere and it’ll come with a “Situational Inappropriate Language” warning. Glad to hear you guys took it well, but I’d hate to have that happen to a guy’s once in a lifetime trip. Ya, it’s a small one, but you couldn’t beat the smile off of Russ’s face. Certianly, my most rewarding giant:smiley:
How were the other boats doing? Did you get the other one that you hooked? any pic?
Sunday was good 94 fish landed, so we heard from the gossip on the docks. One fish was 104", HUGE!!! This fish was fought for almost 4hrs, before being brought boatside. Sorry did not get any pics, to busy with a tuna fire drill. Monday they disappeared. Very few fish caught. According to the researchers the average was 90" so far this year. There were quite a few blackfins, albies, and cobia caught.

Never got pissed. Figured the guy learned his lesson. Would have loved to have got that fish to the boat, but oh well that is fishing. I am a lucky man, I get to fish as much as I want and enjoy all of it. I cant let someone who doesnt know any better ruin a great trip. We can’t cath’em all, we have to leave some for seed.

Who was it? Inquiring minds want to know - this shouldn’t happen again. Reminds me of all of the SC rubberheads that migrate to Arkansas to shoot ducks and give us a bad name.

I dont want to give the boat name, but it was a Contender. He knows what he did and hopefully learned from it. He appologized to the Capt, crew, researchers and me. Just pass the word to everyone: turn on the VHF, watch the other boats and help keep the rest of us from looking like idiots.

Mola,
You need to drink some Red Bull or something and get this thing going! You’re just entirely too nice about it.
You must have caught more than your fair share of BFT? Don’t you think if someone’s out there fishing for BFT they should have a clue?
The only difference between men and boys is the cost of their toys.
I do not get stirred up over too much. I have caught and released more fish than most will in their lifetime. Fishing is what relaxes me, when I pass the rocks the rest of the world goes away, all the worries go away. I eat, breath and sleep fishing. My wife complains I have too many boats (5), looking at more, fishing “crap”, it is what I love. Have fished from here to the keys to the gulf to the west coast up to alaska. I have it better than most and am thankful for every moment. Also I have learned, you can change people more with kindness than anger. They will blow you off if you jump up and down and yell and scream (tried that for a long time). The guy that acts calm and cool will bother them more and they often will remember before they do it again. I sound soft but, there are a few out there that cause me to lose my cool.

I have moments of weakness, I have shall I say it … even freshwater fished. Hope no one holds it against me.[:0]

That is just part of bluefin fishing in NC. We had more than a couple fish lost due to other boats. Two of which were NC charter boats. Sh#T happens is all you can say. Yall did the right thing.
On a side note the sailfish and daytime swordfishing is finally picking up down here in Islamorada. And for the inshore guys, I took yesterday off and caught lots of snook, reds, trout and some where around a million catfish. If your down here and want to go deep gimme a buzz.
tight lines,

Lowcountry, I might beat on your door. Would love to get a daytime sword. Do you know a mate by the name Darrell from your neck of the woods? This guy rigged a spanish like I have never seen before.

Hola, Have the fish showed up at Ocean Isle or Southport yet?? We are planning to roll up there on the 26th if they are catching any.
“Back home we got a taxidermy man. He gonna have a heart attack when he see what I brung him”
Just got some reports. Scattered fish, but not a hot bite. Good luck if you go!
