bamboo works for the tightwads on here
I guess I’m one of the tight wads. I use a 1" round closet rod from Lowes. Get the longest one you can find, paint it and whittle down the end to receive the gig. Place gig on end, drill through rod and insert cotter pin. Wa La.
I also use the Lowes closet rod. Works perfect, strong, floats and doubles as a push pole.

Thanks for all the ideas, headed to the outer banks for six weeks and hopefully I’ll be able to stick a few while I’m up there.
Hey marsha…if you still have the pole let me know! We broke one last trip out! Great seeing you at lunch today!

Which closet rod from Lowes? They have tons of them on their website.

^That’s what I ended up getting. I stained and poly-ed them and they turned out great. I’ll try to post pictures soon. I still need to find something to use for a grip. I’m thinking some wrapped leather cord?
My brother got me some stuff called Sugru for the steering knob on the boat. Stuff is awesome. May want to check it out…
Edit: This is a cool example of how it can be used.

They also sell Bamboo gigging poles at West Marine, right next to the gigging heads. You’ll spend a few more bucks but the fit in perfectly and it’s easy.
