Gigging and walking

I just got my new lights in from China. Only took a month Torchstar, 440 Lumen LEDs and they are very bright. My weekend project will be making the waterproof housing similar to what I have seen on YouTube. I ran one light off of a 9V battery last night at the house, so if it works out right I’m going to get a small Lithium Ion and hopefully never have to drag a deep cycle again.

I plan to make the housing so I can put it on a boat, canoe, kayak or use it walking. My question is: has anyone here been waking/wade gigging in the Charleston Area? Years ago I heard that people would go to the tide pools at the north end of Sullivans with a Coleman Lantern and do pretty good. I’m curious if it is worth trying in locations that I won’t sink up to my butt in mud.

thanks,

I only went a couple times when I was a kid. Was in Pawleys Inlet with a Coleman lantern with alum foil around back so all the light went out the front and not in your eyes. Worked great. My uncles and older cousin got most the fish as they could see them quicker then me. The secret to wading is sandy shelly banks or flats with short grass. They will be walkable just about anywhere you find them. Grass about 12" the bottom will be firm. Grass 18-24" and sink about ankle deep. If grass is 3-5’ tall down even try it. Not sure about the Chas area but, it can be done. Biggest challenge will be finding walkable water. Might be easier to find via boat.
