Tried to go gigging in harbor friday night. Wind was supposed to lay down to 5kt or less. Never did while I was out and plenty of wakes added to chop. Saw one over slot red and some rats in small creeks. Water never left the grass at low tide. Wind must have added to the already +low tide. All murky. If reds were heavy i would have seen their fins. If flounder were there, they were under the cloud of silt. No sheeps either. GOT SKUNKED! I remind myself that it is nights like these that make the cooler-filling nights special (and brings down the annual average catch).
There was a front moving out. I didn’t check to see what the pressure was doing, but i think that may have been the key to no fish present. Did anyone look at the pressure friday evening?
Flounder numbers should get better as summer rolls on, but when it’s real hot, i think they move to the smaller creeks.
I was more looking for sheeps. I have seen 100 to 200 in one night in May several years ago. Never seen anything like it again, but still get good hauls
I hear they are a little stuck up in Murrells Inlet. I probably wouldn’t get along.
ICW behind Sullivan’s would have been leeward shore, but that’s out of range for my motor;)
Gig or spear gun you need the calmness of the sea like Phin’s verses from Luke 8:24-25. You guys can cut up with PaddlePower. He knows when and where to get some fish.
Unfortunately I haven’t been gigging in about 8 years but over the last 3 years or so I’ve noticed a ton of sheeps in the Awendaw IWC. I’ve fished this area for nearly 20 years and never saw many sheeps. During the summer about half the tails in the flats are mid sized sheeps. I haven’t a gone fishing yet this year so I’m not sure if they’re there in numbers but I did see one off the dock about a month ago. Water should still be clear there too.
