I have been flounder gigging by wadding for a while now; I just attach a rope to my kayak and my belt and wade along. It works really well!
If you can paddle to the flat by kayak, I much rather it over a john boat and flounder gigging.
That being said, Sometimes you want to get out of the water or you want to cross to the other side of the channel and its a little too deep. Thus a light setup to pole a kayak would be awesome in certain situations. Why I need yalls help…
I have been using a PVC hand held two headed LED light for walking and wading and gigging. It works really great and runs off little to no power FOREVER. 8 double AA batteries 4 to 6 hours of wadding time and never had to change the batteries.
I just found out how I can now make my own. I want to incorporate the LED lights like the ones used on the walking stick. To be placed on my kayak to light up the entire area around it. How should I do the PVC? Any way yall could think of the keep the light water proof but also allow it to be on a swivel or pivot?
I came up with the idea last year when I had a gig break and I had to hand stick flounder while floating in my kayak and the light hanging off the side over my legs. Yes, I notched a couple holes into my man belt that night.
Any advice would be very much appreciated on light set up configuration and how best I should point them, what wattage and lumens I should want to be producing together or per light…? Really any and all advice u can give me would be greatly appreciated…
I plan to vary my lights with a pattern of lens that are a 90 degrees that throw a wide angles light, to a lens of 30 or 45 degrees that have a more focused “spotlight” approach. With them alternating to give you a pattern of a wide angled focused light to then a focused “spotlight angled light” and back to a wide angle and such. To give you ample lighting up close and then enough to get out on the perimeters
Or mulit wide angled lens in the middle of the kayak pointed out towards the middle of
Bryant, I doubt if anyone has thought this through as much as you have. Sounds like a lot of fun. Post some pics when you get it rigged up. I’d like to try it.
Never thought twice about wading for flounder until that one night sticking fish in the boat a few years back when we drifted over about a 9 foot gator and he never moved an inch… Just watched us… decided right then and there that I would never wade for em. Good luck.
I’ve done a good amount of wading. Now im not going to be excited if I walk up on a gator. But if I can see a flounder covered in sand from 15-20 feet. I hope I can notice a log laying in 1 to 3 feet of water. Or hopefully will notice the reflectors known as the eyes. Ive only seen one aggresive alligator and it swam towards a small dog. Every other gator ive seen one on one. Has booked it and ran. So I guess my point it dont walk to them on purpose but respect them and they will you.
I have put a lot of thought into it and my friends have been wadding gigging flounder for years and years and john boats. I just was lucky enough to learn from them a couple trips at a time.
The walking LED lights are amazing. I still want to primarily do that because the flouder will get right up on the edge of the bank and walking is just the most effective right there. or I just like it. But in the 2-3 foot water or the sand bar in the middle of the creek. These places would be easier standing up on the kayak and having the lights around you.
So I figure if I can build them for cheap. It sure would be cool. At the very least I learn about using lights in another fishing senario. haha. But I dont see why it want be really good. Its just going to depend on how draining the lights are. I want to be able to run between 8 and 12 lights. My friend that I’ve always gone with has a two headed LED light stick to wade with. It takes 8 AA batteries and last all night no problem with plenty of light. So I assume I could run 12 of them with a Deep Cycle battery and have a white square of beautiful light around my kayak.
I need advice on amps, voltage or whatever I should be looking at
Names of LED Bulbs
How many lumens should I am for or do Johnboats try for…

Thanks so much for all the advice. I am building a pvc set up like my friend has. So I need a name of a good very bright and hopefully low wattage bulb. But any suggestion on a LED Bulb would be amazing!!
ADDID I dont know if you got my email. But if you could email me pictures of the riggers and a price. I just might be interested… Thanks. Gardnerbp@gmail.com
